3 Days in Brisbane with Your Dog — A Local Guide

Brisbane doesn’t get enough credit as a dog city. I’ve lived and practised here for nearly a decade, and I can tell you that the combination of year-round mild weather, genuinely off-leash-friendly parklands, and a café culture that actually welcomes dogs makes it one of the best cities in Australia to travel with your pet.

That said, knowing where to go — and when — makes an enormous difference. As a local vet, I’ve designed this itinerary around what actually works for dogs in Brisbane: venues with genuine off-leash access rather than just “dog tolerant” policies, walks that are safer in Brisbane’s climate, and accommodation that won’t give you the runaround at check-in. I’ve included the safety considerations you won’t find in generic travel guides, because Queensland has some genuine hazards that every pet owner needs to know about.

This is a guide I’d hand to a client arriving from interstate with their dog. It is not exhaustive — Brisbane has dozens of worthy dog-friendly spots — but it covers three days that I’d confidently recommend.

Itinerary

South Bank, Kangaroo Point & New Farm Park

Day one stays close to the city, which is perfect for settling your dog into a new environment after the journey. Brisbane's south bank precinct and the river loop offer some of the most dog-friendly urban walking in Queensland, with excellent café options and a stunning city backdrop.

EARLY MORNING 7:00-8:15 AM

Kangaroo Point Cliffs Park

Cross the Story Bridge on foot or drive the short distance to Kangaroo Point. The cliffs park has excellent river views and a wide grassed area at the base that’s well-suited for a leg stretch. Dogs must be on leash. The area has shade trees and water taps — important in warmer months. The views of the CBD from the lower park are genuinely spectacular.

MORNING 8:15-09:45 AM

Coffee & brunch at Joey’s, Kangaroo Point

Joey’s is one of those Brisbane spots that genuinely earns its reputation. Perched atop the Kangaroo Point cliffs, it offers a sweeping 180-degree panorama spanning the City Botanic Gardens, Brisbane CBD skyline, and South Bank — the kind of view that makes you linger over a second coffee. The pavilion-style restaurant has an extensive covered timber deck fitted with blue and white beach umbrellas, ceiling fans and relaxed patio furniture, giving it a coastal, unhurried feel that dogs seem to appreciate as much as their owners. Dogs are welcome during breakfast service from 6am to 11am on a walk-in basis — which makes it the perfect post-cliffs-walk reward. Arrive before 08:30am to secure a deck table with the full city view

LATE MORNING 10:15 AM-12:30 PM

South Bank Parklands & Riverside Walk

Dogs are welcome on leads throughout most of South Bank’s parklands and the riverside promenade. The early morning is cooler and significantly quieter — you’ll have the river views largely to yourselves. Walk south along the river path toward the Goodwill Bridge. Note: dogs are not permitted in the beach lagoon area itself.

AFTERNOON 2:00-4:30 PM

New Farm Park — off-leash zone

New Farm Park is one of Brisbane’s most loved green spaces and has a designated off-leash area in the lower section near the river. It’s large, well-shaded, and generally relaxed. The jacaranda season (late October to November) makes it particularly spectacular. After the off-leash run, walk along the Brisbane River promenade toward the Powerhouse — it’s paved, shaded in sections, and beautiful at this time of day.

EVENING 6:00 PM ONWARD

Dinner at Felons Brewing Co., Howard Smith Wharves

Felons has a large outdoor terrace along the river and is dog-friendly in the alfresco areas. The setting — under the Story Bridge with river views — is hard to beat. The food and drinks are consistently good. Dogs must be on leash and out of the bar interior. Bookings strongly recommended on weekends.

Bayside — Wynnum Esplanade & Manly Harbour Village

Brisbane’s bayside suburbs are chronically underrated as a dog destination. Wynnum and Manly are only 25 minutes from the CBD but feel completely different — relaxed, local, and genuinely oriented around the water. This is my personal favourite day of the itinerary

EARLY MORNING 6:30-8:30AM

Wynnum Wading Pool & Esplanade off-leash area

The Wynnum foreshore has a designated off-leash area north of the wading pool — a long stretch of grassed esplanade right on Moreton Bay. At low tide, dogs can access the mudflats and shallow water. It’s gloriously open, well-frequented by local dog owners, and never feels crowded in the early hours. Check the tide times before you go — high tide covers the flat.

MID-MORNING 8:30-10:30AM

Manly Harbour Village — café and waterfront stroll

Drive the short 5 minutes from Wynnum to Manly and explore the harbour precinct. The Manly Boat Harbour area has several cafés with outdoor seating that welcome dogs. The boats, the smell of salt air, and the relaxed pace make this the kind of place you stay longer than planned. My recommendation: grab a long black, find a shaded table with a harbour view, and let your dog snooze for an hour.

AFTERNOON 1:00 -4:00PM

Lota Reserve and foreshore walk

LATE AFTERNOON 5:00PM

Continue south along the bay to Lota, which has a quieter foreshore reserve and additional off-leash areas. The walking track between Lota and Birkdale follows the foreshore and is mostly shaded. This section of coastline is genuinely peaceful — not heavily visited by tourists, which is exactly the point. Keep dogs away from the mangroves, where ticks can harbour.

Return to accommodation — tick check

Before anything else: a thorough full-body tick check. Run your fingers against the grain of the coat, paying particular attention to inside the ears, between toes, under the collar, around the groin and armpits. This takes 5–7 minutes and should be non-negotiable after any Brisbane outing near vegetation or water. Read more about vets recommended tick prevention here.

Wynnum Elanora Park Off-Leash Area

Spacious and well-regarded dog park with separate areas for small and large dogs. It features ample amenities like drinking bowls, seating, and a boardwalk through mangroves, creating a safe and enjoyable environment for dogs of all sizes.

Manly Harbour precinct

Multiple dog-friendly cafés on the waterfront including the Cafe La Mer.Relaxed, shaded outdoor seating. Best visited mid-morning on weekdays to avoid weekend crowds. Dogs on leash throughout.

Mount Coot-tha, Fig Tree Pocket & Farewell Brunch

A gentler final day — some elevated walking for those who want it, followed by a relaxed brunch before heading home. Mount Coot-tha offers Brisbane's best city views and genuinely pleasant trail walking in the cooler months.

EARLY MORNING 6:30-9:00 AM

Mount Coot-tha walking trails

Dogs are permitted on leash on most of the Mount Coot-tha walking tracks. The JC Slaughter Falls circuit (2.7km) is one of the most accessible, passing through eucalypt forest and occasionally spotted with Brisbane’s incredible birdlife. Go early — the summit road gets busy quickly, and the forest trails are considerably cooler than exposed city walks. Keep dogs on leash strictly: the area has native wildlife and snakes during warmer months. Extensive track map provided by Brisbane Council here

MID-MORNING 9:30-11:00 AM

Brookfield General Store — farewell brunch

One of Brisbane’s most beloved café destinations, the Brookfield General Store sits in the leafy western suburbs a short drive from Mount Coot-tha. Outdoor seating is available and dogs are welcome on the deck. The food — particularly the eggs and pastries — is exceptional. It draws a local crowd, which is always a good sign. Arrive early on weekends; it fills quickly.

LATE MORNING 11:30 AM

Fig Tree Pocket off-leash reserve (optional add-on)

If you have time before heading home, Fig Tree Pocket Park has a large off-leash area right on the Brisbane River — shaded, flat, and excellent for a final run. It’s a popular spot with local dog owners and has water facilities on site.
